Special K Protein Shake
Ok-more beverage posts...
The folks at Special K contacted me and asked me if I would like to try a sample of their new(ish) protein shake. Of course, being a sucker for anything free and easy, I said yes. A couple of days later the shake arrived and I immediately had to try a taste. I am not a regular consumer of protein shakes; I only occasionally mix up my own with Designer Whey Protein powder, but rarely buy the pre-made ones.
Back in the day, when I was working full time, I would buy the Slim Fast shakes, or the Costco ones to help me get breakfast in. Of course I liked them, anything chocolate and sugary is good to me. However, they never filled me up for more than a couple of hours.
They sent me the Milk Chocolate flavor, which was very tasty. There is 10 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber, which is nice since most protein shakes don't have nearly that amount of fiber. In Weight Watcher's terms, they have 3 points.
Summary:
Tastes Great (Similar to Slim Fast)
3 Points
A great snack, but it wouldn't work for ME for a meal replacement
Good to know! I have been thinking about trying these. Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review! Liquids just never work for me as a meal replacement... wish they did but I need "food food" to feel/get full!
ReplyDeleteI have been using these as a quick something right after I workout to give e a boost of protein. Not sure they would fill you up as a meal replacement, but for three points they are good source of extra protein...and they are yummy!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know how it works but both slim fast shakes and Special K protein shakes DO fill me up. Heck, sometimes I get too full to even finish the whole drink. Maybe that is just me. Anyway, I only use 4 a week to skip 4 meals when I am dieting. I eat Cheerios instead of dinner when dieting as well. Works for me.
ReplyDeleteThese things have 18g of sugar. That's almost as much as is in a can of soda. This is definitely not a diet drink.
ReplyDelete18 grams of SUGAR! And you know what that turns into to!!
ReplyDeleteThese work for interim lifts but I worry about the carbs.
ReplyDeleteI'm worried about the carbs, too. I have one of these every morning (I actually just finished one) along with a hard boiled egg. The combination keeps me full for about 3 hours. I love them.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine is a nutritionist and strength coach. She told me that chocolate milk is better than any protein shake around. She suggested I drink it after each weight lifting session. I bought the 100 calorie Nesquik drinks, which I believe are 2 WW points. Just thought I'd share. :)
ReplyDeleteThe nesquik is 3 points
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to know the honest opinion of this! I have always tried things like and they never feel full afterwards. Hopefully someday they will come out with one that does!
ReplyDeleteGood info! I have seen many protein shakes and like to tell that before using any protein shakes you have to know about that brands product reviews. So it makes you safe. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome. I can't imagine many guys using it though.
ReplyDeleteYou know that i started to drink these (a week ago) i usually take them after my workout (That way i dont eat dinner) and it satisfies me :) i had one today for breakfast and i wasnt hungry at all, didn't have to eat a snack!
ReplyDeleteI only bought 1 pack but im deff going to buy more! :)
I love these. I have no problem with this supplementing my breakfast. Whenever you change your diet, it takes a minuete for you body to get used to. At first I was hungry in the morning even after having the shake but as time went on my body got used to it. It holds me over just fine til lunch. I would drink one about 8am and have lunch at 12. I am a big girl but as I am changing my eating habits and working out I have lost 30 lbs in 3 months. I drink this alot because it tastes great, has the protein, and the fiber. Nothing is an easy weight loss fix. Only a healthy diet and exercise will work successfully. Good luck
ReplyDeleteIf a can of any soda only had 18 g of sugar I wouldn't have quit them! Try 65g of sugar for one can of coca cola! I love these shakes after a workout! And they do keep you full. Apples have 19g of sugar and don't keep me full nearly as long!
ReplyDeleteAlthough very true statements..(both factual and your own personal opinion). I absolutely love the taste of the drink. It is a perfect breakfast/lunch/snack replacement. I have not only lost weight but it has significantly increased the growth of my hair.
ReplyDeleteWell I just started the shake this weeks and I had a question. Is it really okay to replace it for meal?
ReplyDeleteI started drinking the protein shakes and I just have to say that I <3 it.. Hopefully I do lose weight, but I just like to enjoy it in the morning before I leave to school ;)
ReplyDeleteI love your blog! And i'm trying to lose weight from 144 to 115 or 120! And i love this special K review. Thanks for the review :)))

ReplyDeleteI am a 68W (medic) in the Army and have started drinking these for lunch, as a meal replacement. They keep me full until dinner, and also give me time to take a nap if I am tired after the work we have already accomplished during the day (or lack there of on some days lol). I don't like chocolate (yeah I know communist) but the French Vanilla ones are decent. I am still under my weight limit, but am just trying to lose the 10 extra pounds I gained during the 16 weeks of AIT training.
ReplyDeleteEverybody is different. If you can drink a cup of coffee in the morning and not be hungry till lunch, then using the shakes for replacing breakfast or lunch will probably work just fine for you. It does for me :) I'm not using the shakes to lose weight but to maintain a healthy weight and an alternative lunch. If I get hungry I tend to go where ever I can to eat cuz I'm starving, even if its not healthy. these are healthy and quick and easy especially for someone on the go.
ReplyDeleteLOVE these! I have a horrible habit (some might call it addiction)of eating late and if I don't eat before bed I sleep walk and eat sometimes as much as 4 times a night. It's called NES (night eating syndrom) Maybe you have heard of it? Anyhow right before bed I drink the vanilla shake and it keeps me satisfied until the morning so I can sleep and maintain weight like a normal person can. Probably not the best time to chug protein but when your battling an eating/sleeping disorder it works wonders. Just thought I would share with those that may struggle the way I do.
ReplyDeleteMmmmmm...Yummy Yummy. I love chocolate!
ReplyDeleteI bought this for my lunch at work, and yes they are tasty (better than most protein shakes) and they are filling, but only for a short period of time, not quite filling enough to cover as a meal. I get hungry again within about 2 hours.
ReplyDeleteI say it is a great after workout boost, but to replace a meal I think mixing whey protein with a little bit of peanut butter works better, that lasts for hours!
I finished a pack of 4 and never felt full from a shake. I drank one really fast once and felt slightly at ease but I was hungry a little while later. I can't tell that it has any fiber in it & it just didn't really do much for me but give me the chocolate fix I was craving.
ReplyDeleteI have try a few similar product but It never suppress my hunger.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should try this. I love working out and I guess this will help me build more muscles. Thanks for the tip :)
